Uruguay advocates for a different participation at MERCOSUR

Uruguay’s President Luis Lacalle Pou expressed his interest in participating in the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR, in Spanish) with a “slightly different” near future, while speaking at the virtual 59th Summit of heads of State.

He said that this is why Uruguay was clear on the path it is following, and on which it will insist “in the times to come,” referring to future bilateral trade agreements with China and other prospective countries.

Lacalle Pou highlighted that there was “sincerity” among the different leaders of the bloc and agrees with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro that they could not reach total understandings because there was a part that did not see the fulfillment of all those interests in this modernization process.

In another moment of his speech, he acknowledged progress with Argentina, through the construction of the Bella Union and Monte Caseros bridges, and bilateral dialogues.

To this he added the steps taken in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Soul to enable the lagoon waterway, towards a regional strategy of interconnection and physical and commercial connection.

He also highlighted the work of the foreign ministries, in order to be able to gradually, when health makes it possible, open the borders with Argentina and Brazil.
