The UN highlights the importance of the “Food Pact”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Secretary General António Guterres highlighted the importance of complying with the pact to export Ukrainian grain during their meeting.

At the meeting, held as part of the 77th UN General Assembly, both officials discussed the implementation of the Istanbul Agreements, which guarantee the export of Ukrainian grains and Russian fertilizers, the Sputnik news agency said.

The parties confirmed the need to guarantee its character as a package and its full implementation.

In addition, Lavrov and Guterres discussed the cooperation of Russia and the UN, as well as concrete initiatives to make the work of the organization and its secretariat more effective.

Both politicians reaffirmed the commitment to maintain the central coordinating role of the UN, whose activities must be strictly based on its statutory objectives and principles, including the sovereign equality of all member states.

On July 22nd, Russia, Turkey and the UN signed an agreement in Istanbul to unblock Ukraine’s grain and fertilizer exports amid hostilities.

Representatives of the Ukrainian government signed a similar document with Ankara and representatives of the United Nations.

In addition, Russia signed a memorandum with the UN to facilitate the export of Russian fertilizers and agricultural products to international markets.
