En fecha reciente nuestro periódico publicó una carta enviada a nuestra redacción y firmada por Colombian Action Solidarity Alliance (CASA) que buscaba respuestas sobre supuestas acusaciones imputadas al entonces candidato a alcalde de Toronto, Gil Peñalosa.
A continuación reproducimos íntegramente la aclaración que Peñalosa hizo llegar a nuestro medio en respuesta a las interrogantes de CASA:
Hace 100 días inscribí la candidatura cuando tendría unos 10 votos de familiares y amigos. Esta semana obtuve 100,000 votos, más que cualquier Hispano en la historia de Candadá, algo para celebrar. Más que todos los alcaldes del área metropolitana de Toronto. Logré cambia la conversación a temas de ciudad, niños, ancianos, árboles, parques, vivienda accesible, caminar, etc., todo con enfoque en equidad.
Es un éxito como inmigrante, donde la mayoría tiene tantas barreras, y ningún líder de ciudad, provincia, o federal pelea por las soluciones.
Espero de alguna forma seguir colaborando por tener una Toronto para todos, y apoyando ciudades en todas partes. Como sabes, he trabajado en más de 350 ciudades en todos los continentes. La semana entrante en Oregon, USA, creando Age Friendly Communities.
Statement on my career in Bogota, Colombia
I am happy to answer any questions about my career in Colombia, or anywhere in the world. In Bogota it included building over 200 parks and launching the new Ciclovia – the largest open streets project in the world.
According to one magazine article, decades ago, Colombian authorities, led by political opponents of my brother, investigated a contract the city awarded to a company where my family had had 1/11th stake, which was given away (operations had not even began) long before I was offered to be commissioner. I was issued a summons to answer the investigation’s questions, which I originally did not receive because it went to an in-existing address and because I was living in Toronto at the time, working as diplomat for Colombia’s government.
When the questions were sent to the consulate in Toronto, as should have been from the start, two days later I went and answered all questions, and months later the investigation was closed. The investigation has been shut down for over 20 years. I’ve never received so much as a fine in my life, in Bogota or anywhere else.
